Language and Power: Exploring Political Cultures in Indonesia
Published in Paperback by Cornell Univ Pr (December, 1990)
Author: Benedict R. O'G. Anderson
Average review score:

A Must Read Book To Begin Understanding Indonesian Politics
Within his collection of essays in this book, Anderson explores the underlying cultures of Indonesian politics. He ties back the political atmosphere of Indonesia to the social values of the most dominant culture in Indonesia, the Javanese culture. These essays were written prior to 1984 (mostly in the late 60's), but their contents relate well even to the present political scenes of Indonesia.

As an American citizen with Indonesian ancestry, I find that this book would help anyone who is interested in learning the complexity of Indonesia's sociopolitical arena. A lot of misunderstandings about Indonesia's politics can be cleared by reading this book. This book does not talk about the current political scenes, rather it explains the origins of political values that are dominant in Indonesia even today.

Lawnmower Blues
Published in Unknown Binding by Hard Shell Word Factory (01 May, 1998)
Author: Rex Anderson
Average review score:

Lawnmower Blues captures your attention like rapid gunfire.
In the first lines of Rex Anderson's fourth and latest novel we meet the main character, Private Investigator Tony Aapt-- a clever and, well, apt name considering that anything is apt to happen in this fresh and funny story about a David-Duchovny-ish gumshoe who finds himself suddenly reunited with an aging bartender pal, 30 years a widow now and recently come into BIG money, who throws the goofy, charming Tony, teller of tall detective tales, a BIG job-- to prove her husband's alleged suicide was actually cold-blooded murder. It's questionable at first if Tony has the, uh, aptitude to investigate this long-dead case-- thus far his forays into solving crimes and misdemeanors have earned him only an apartment full of shabby furniture, a refrigerator full of low-end domestic beer, and an ancient auto. But off goes Tony through a labyrinth of crossing paths-- from esteemed professors at Rice University to gay bars and their sometimes surprising patrons, from a high schoo! l football star turned big-bellied baseball fanatic to the richest of Houston's rich to the pinnacles of political power. And, in the midst of it all-- the seemingly clear-cut autopsy photos, the clear-eyed newly rich widow who KNOWS who killed her husband and why-- stands the forlorn and baffling lawnmower...

Lawnmower Blues captures your attention like rapid gunfire-- and I promise you will not stop reading this book until Anderson's done with you. If you like murder mysteries heavily peppered with hilarity and the shrewd weaving of people's strange lives and (mis)deeds, this is a must read. If you only treat yourself to one private dick this summer, make it Anderson's Tony Aapt.

Fantastic Book. A must for All Youth Leaders!
I've learned more about Youth in the first two chapters than I have in my time working with them. Its taking me a while to read. There is a paragraph, a line, a word to underline or highlight on every page that hits home to our Youth Problem and how to go about solving it. This book is excellent for working with Both Christian and non-Christian Young People. Youth Leaders, get it and read it. The ideas and bible study in it will enhance your work with your Youth!

Leaving Home (Family Living in Pastoral Perspective)
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (August, 1993)
Authors: Herbert Anderson and Kenneth R. Mitchell
Average review score:

Buy the Whole Series
I own Anderson's entire Family Living in Pastoral Perspective series (Leaving Home, Becoming Married, Regarding Children, Promising Again, and Living Alone), and I refer to them frequently.

Each book focuses on a different transitional event and the family tasks that event brings into focus. Anderson and his co-authors deal sensitively with the pastoral issues involved.

Leaving Home focuses on persons leaving home (both physically and emotionally) as young adults. It approaches the topic not as a one-time event, but as a long-term emotional process. Both sides (young adult and parents) of the transition are covered. Ample resources are provided for ministry to these families.

All of the books are well-written and easy to read--no convoluted prose to parse here. The works have added texture from the many personal examples shared by the authors (both their own and examples others have shared with them).

Every book in the series deserves an honored place on any religious professional's shelf. Except, you may find them so valuable they rarely make it back to your shelf.

A Life in Medicine: A Literary Anthology
Published in Paperback by New Press (01 September, 2003)
Authors: Robert Coles, Randy Testa, M. Brownell Anderson, Penny Armstrong, and Joseph O'Donnell
Average review score:

A literary look at the human side of medicine
Whenever I see a book with Robert Coles name on it I know it will be worthwhile to read. Coles served as one of several editors of A Life in Medicine: A Literary Anthology and the selections within are outstanding. They include poems, essays, short stories, and excerpts from longer works. The authors range from those working in the field (nurses, medical students, midwives, and physicians) to those not commonly associated with the field (e.g., Raymond Carver).

The book is thought provoking and emphasizes how we are all connected to the process of life and death. As a physician (with writing as an avocation) I thought it offered a wonderful look at the many facets of medical care and those that deliver it.

This book would be a wonderful gift for anyone in the profession but can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the human condition.

Life Is Change Growth Is Optional
Published in Paperback by Center for Executive Planning (May, 1995)
Authors: Karen Kaiser Clark and Larry W. Anderson
Average review score:

Life Is Change Growth Is Optional
I found Life Is Change Growth Is Optional to be easy to read, enticing and to the point. This book compares the cycles of human psyche to the cycles of the life of a tree. Using the four seasons to demonstrate the variety of changes the author matches the growth and withering of the tree to the growth and dorment cycles of the human psyche. The print is big enough for us oldsters to read!
